The IMPACT AXIS model represents many of the issues involved in global development. We cannot simply start changing the way the world works and expect no significant
backlash. The partition of Palestine is a perfect example. Unfortunately, the world must change in order to deal with the problems of Globalization. This model represents some aspects of the many that neet to be considered.TRANSFORMATION-Based on the section on
globalization, there are a great many problems in the world that simply will not go away by themselves. Some of those problems include: |

STABILITY |
Trying to find a reasonable level of stability in many regions of the world is very difficult. Whether from internal or external sources,or
both, change must come about for practical, humanitarian and political reasons. Bringing about stability however, does not always insure human rights and other issues of globalization. |

SUSTAINABILITY: |
Climate change is one of those issues that engender intense debate between developing and industrialized nations.Reducing carbon emissions is
important to the long term stability of the planet, but developing nations need affordable energy to sustain their economic development. |

SURVIVABILITY: |
Life on this planet is assured for no organism, particularly humans. In order to enhance our chances of long term survival there a any number
of change which need to be implemented. Oftentimes, however, there is a tradeoff between the steps we take to insure our survival and those we take to insure our doom. The development of nuclear arms is
evidence of this. There are no easy equations to insure our survival as: |

PRESERVATION-Pitted against the forces of transformation, there are many people dedicated to resisting any
form of change. Those who are trying to stimulate change cannot understand their resistance to progress. Such resistance would be against any form of change because of the perception of loss of something irreplaceable
and precious. Yet, preserving certain aspects of the world can be a threat to us all. |

CULTURE: |
Culture is the unique expression of the adaptation of particular people to conditions in which their societies developed. Culture, for the most part, can
be worth preserving--but it is not an absolute. Apartheid was part of the culture of South Africa to which many were dedicated to preserving. Ultimately the world was transformed a bit when the practice was abolished.

TRADITION: |
Tradition helps to define and express a unique people and for the most part is worth preserving. Once again, though, there are traditional customs and
practices that offend the sensibilities of the planet to such an extent that the world is outraged. An example of this would be the notion of forced female circumcision. |

NOVELTY: |
There are particular people, places and animals that are so uniquely different that their loss would be an impoverishment of the entire planet. This issue
arises frequently in dealing with habitats of endangered species, but also in geologically different but fragile places on the planet. Sometimes the whole world gets involved in the preservation, which creates problems
with cultures and traditions. Never easy to reconcile. |
